Leadership Styles

Today we talked about leadership styles and linked them up with characters that have similar traits.  For example, some of you identified with the shark, others the turtle, owl or teddy bear.  Remember: groups need all four leadership styles.  They work best together!

What leadership role will you try next?

Team Building: Lava Pit

Congratulations Grade 7/8! You did a great job working as a team today. You listened to each other, took turns speaking, worked together, encouraged each other, made sure everyone was included and made it safely back to the classroom. You did this all in record time (14 mins and 33.6 seconds!) and the lava monster didn’t catch you! After, you put a lot of great thought into your group work guidelines. Well done! Keep up the great teamwork!

How many Jelly Beans?

Great communication today! From partners, to small groups and finally the whole class, you communicated very well. I like how you passed the object to identify the speaker and to ensure that only one person spoke at a time. That was a great strategy. Also, I liked how you made the circle to make sure everyone felt like their opinion mattered. Fantastic teamwork and communication!

Community

Today we each brought in our own rock that represents how we are all unique and we each bring talents to our classroom.

We are all connected together. Today we shared our connections and showed them through a web.

Together we are an even stronger, more talented community of learners!

Multiple Intelligences and Learning Styles

Today we talked about learning styles and multiple intelligences.

We each answered a survey that told us about our unique learning styles.  We learned that some of us like to learn by hearing, some like to learn by seeing, and others like to learn by doing. Most of us had a combination of the three learning styles.

We know this is important because Ms Duncan can make sure we have the opportunity to learn things in different ways. (Meghan)

We did this activity so you know what we are best in and how we like express our learning. (Emilee)

It helps Ms.Duncan understand and know how to teach me best because she can have a variety of activities. She can show us how to do something, tell us about it or even have us read about it. (Meghan)

For most people body smart was dominant. That means we like to show what we know by moving or doing. We like to learn by doing. (Tosh)

The graphs show they way we like to learn and show our learning. (Olivia)

As a group we decided that learning about MI and learning styles was important because:

We all like to LEARN in a different way and we all like to show what we know in a unique way. We have similarities that help us to work together too.

Why do we LEARN math?

Today we talked about why we learn math. This lead us to a discussion about needing it for highschool, to get good grades and then finally because we need it to do all kinds of things in the real world.

Here is an example of some of the places where we see or do math:

Where do you use or see math in the world?

Math Attitudes

Today we made math glyphs that represent our feelings and attitudes about mathematics.

Here is what we learned about the 24 students (11 boys and 13 girls) in our class:

  • 17 students worry that it will be difficult for them in math class and 7 people never worry.

  • In our class 4 people love math (2 boys and 2 girls), 9 people like math (3 boys and 6 girls), 9 people sometimes feel okay about math (5 boys and 4 girls), 1 person feels math really isn’t their thing (1 boy) and one person hates math (1 boy).
  • We think this means that almost half the class has negative feelings about math.

  • When it comes to problem solving, 1 student feels hopeless, 6 feel confident but most of us feel okay solving problems.

  • When problem solving, 13 students like to think of different ways to solve problems while 9 do not.

  • When it comes to using manipulatives in math class 11 students like using them (5 boys, 6 girls).   More than half the class, 13 students (6 boys and 7 girls), do not like to use manipulatives.

During math class:

  • 9 students like to learn from the textbook, 11 students like to solve problems and 4 like open tasks.
  • 5 students like to share their ideas (2 boys, 3 girls) 8 students are okay with sharing their ideas (5 girls, 3 boys) and 10 students do not like to share their ideas (4 girls, 6 boys)

  • When asked what motivates us to learn we picked from a list of ideas (we could pick more than one):
    • Good Grades – 18 votes
    • to Learn – 2 votes
    • to be ready for high school – 10 votes
    • So you don’t disappoint your parents – 9 votes
    • Math is used daily in the real world – 3 votes
