The Blogging Challange

For ten weeks our class is taking on the blogging challange. We are going to write ten blog posts on our own student blogs for ten weeks to challange ourselves to become better bloggers. This week is the first week of the blogging challange and we had to write to ten insperational or important people, dead or alive, and write one or more questions that we wanted to ask them. Some students chose to write to late family members or people they look up to and some chose to write to  famous people. Something i think that is cool about this is that teachers, students , and other people can look at our posts and comment on them so you can get feedback and think deeper about what you are writing. I think this is going to be a great experence for our class and we all are going to become awesome bloggers.

happy blogging!

Baesed on our own stress and the people around us. The flow charts help us and our peers figure out what to do when they get stressed and cause for our stress.

Grade 8 Debate!

Yesterday the grade 8’s participated in a debate on whether we should have genetically modified foods or not. Sam, Thomas, Alexander, and Zach were against having genetically modified foods, while Emilee, Matt, Hannah, Jessica, and Jade were for them. Unfortunately Jade wasn’t at school, so she couldn’t participate 🙁  Sam became a shark and took leadership of his group, while Matt, Emilee and Hannah shared that role for the other group. Jessica, Thomas, Alex, and Zach were more laid back, but when they said something, boy was it a good point! Sam, Alex, Zach and Thomas had very interesting points to why we shouldn’t have genetically modified foods but the other group always had a re-buttle! Before the debate started all of us voted if we thought we should eat genetically modified foods, the results were 14 yes, and 8 no. I guess the debate really changed peoples minds, because when we voted at the end it was tied 11-11! I hope we get to do a debate again soon!

DEFORESTATION IN BORNEO!!!!

Borneo was an island that was full of dense and luscious rainforests. Until now.

People have been chopping down the trees and have been destroying animals homes to collect Palm oil.

Palm oil is a yellow butterlike oil  from the fruit of the oil palm and used as an edible fat and for making soap, candles, etc.

If you want to help save this islands beautiful rainforests here are some ways to help. Check some cosmetics and food for palm oil. Then limit the use of palm oil if possible. (you don’t have to) Another way is to join Earthwatchers.com. It is a free program that you can help monitor your own piece of rainforests! You can look at satellite images to see if your land or other peoples land is under attack. Please spread the word to your friends and families.

THANK YOU FOR READING THIS, I HOPE YOU CAN HELP!!

Why Joe Kittinger’s Jump was Better than Red Bull Stratos

On Sunday Felix Baumgartner jumped from 128 100 feet and reached a total speed of 1,342.8 km/h. In 1960 Joe Kittinger Jumped from 102,800 feet and reached a total speed of 988 km/h. I think Joe Kittinger’s jump was better.

Joe Kittinger did this 62 years ago. The technology that was used in Kittinger’s jump was primitive compared to Baumgartner’s jump. Baumgartner had a parachute that would automatically open at 5000 feet, no such luck for Kittinger. Joe’s pressurized glove malfunctioned at 43,000 feet and experienced severe pain in his hand while it swelled to twice it’s normal size. He continued up another 59800 feet. Kittinger’s parachute was an old design and was incredibly hard to control. Baumgartners’ chute was a state of the art parachute that is lightyears ahead of Kittinger’s design. Baumgartner weighed 260 pounds with all the equipment and Kittinger had to wear extra clothes and his equipment was much larger and bulkier.

You choose whos jump was your favourite.

stratusphere jump!!!

Austrian sky diver felix baumgartner jumped from the stratusphere and landed in new mexico safley. During this time he beat 3 world records one was the highest flight on a stratusphere ballon, the highest parachute jump and fastest free fall. He was the first person to break the sound barrier. Felix ascended to the altitube of about 38.6 kilometers in a space capsule attached to a ballon. A special suit was specialy designed for felix and without the suit he would have lost conciousness as soon as he entered the stratusphere. The free fall lasted four minutes and was amazing to watch!!!! when i saw the video of felix jumping  i was blown away  and im sure lots of other people who watched this video were as well. One of the things that i wondered was why he would do this even for a lot of money because he is risking his life. The other thing that came into my mind was who was gaining from this??? but mainly i thought WOW.

Wes Prankard

Today we watched a video about a boy  named Wes Prankard who wants to make a difference in the world. He wants to stop discrimination between aboriginal people and non aboriginal people, he started his own blog Wes Prankard Website to try to inform people about child rights in aboriginal communitys. Wes has been able to give communitys in need a playground so that the kids in bad living conditions something to look forward to. Quote ” My mission is to build a playground in every northern community in Canada that doesn’t have one!” We think that if you really try anyone could  make a difference just like Wes Prankard did. Book talks!

Grade 7/8’s have been working on book talks in class. We have all choosen a book that we would like to talk about in front of the class. Doing this I’ve heard some interesting books that I think me and others in the class would enjoy. There were a couple of stages that we went through. Planning, writing it out, practising with a peer then presenting. I think this was/is a fun activity that helps us learn about other books that we might enjoy.
