Movie: The Bully

Today we discussed 5 inspirational stories about victims of bullying. Next week we are attending the movie “The Bully” and it is based on these 5 stories. The paragraphs that we read about each family were emotional and really eye opening. Hearing about each story made us want to stand up and not let people hurt others or themselves. We answered questions about each group and we used livescribe pens to record our thinking about each family. There stories made us think about how everyone is different in their own way. They may be “not cool” or have special needs but that shouldn’t change how people treat them. Everyone is special in their own way. It is what makes them unique and makes them who they are. No one should be judged for being themselves. When people make fun of people because they have special needs it makes me upset (Hannah). I have a friend with special needs and if you take the time to get to know him you would find out how funny and awesome he is. (Emilee) I had a similar experience at camp when I got to know a girl with special needs. She was very reserved but when I got to know her she opened up and felt comfortable to talk to me.

All Aboard the Drama Bus!

Yesterday in drama we played the Bus game. Basically, how it works is you start off with the bus driver, then you let in a passenger. The passenger has to act a sertain mood. Once they are on the bus, everyone else in that bus has to be in the same mood! We had SO much fun, and are going to play again today! It really ties in to drama because you really have to use your imagination to act in the mood! šŸ™‚

Grade 8 Debate!

Yesterday the grade 8’s participated in a debate on whether we should have genetically modified foods or not. Sam, Thomas, Alexander, and Zach were against having genetically modified foods, while Emilee, Matt, Hannah, Jessica, and Jade were for them. Unfortunately Jade wasn’t at school, so she couldn’t participate šŸ™ Ā Sam became a shark and took leadership of his group, while Matt, Emilee and Hannah shared that role for the other group. Jessica, Thomas, Alex, and Zach were more laid back, but when they said something, boy was it a good point! Sam, Alex, Zach and Thomas had very interesting points to why we shouldn’t have genetically modified foods but the other group always had a re-buttle! Before the debate started all of us voted if we thought we should eat genetically modified foods, the results were 14 yes, and 8 no. I guess the debate really changed peoples minds, because when we voted at the end it was tied 11-11! I hope we get to do a debate again soon!

A visit from Mr. Shawyer!

Today Mr. Shawyer came and taught our class and the other grade 8 class about my blueprint.com and Career Cruising.com. My blue print is about, setting goals for yourself, you set 2 short term goals and 1 long term goal for yourself! Career cruising is a site where you go to see what careers are right for you! You answer questions with you either dislike very much, dislike, does not matter, like, or like very much the statement it gives you. You get 40 possible careers that the site feels is right for you! They are both very great sites that help with getting prepared for high school and for choosing what career you want when your older! Thanks Mr. Shawyer for showing us these incredible sites!

Creating QR codes!

Today we learned how to create a QR code for the Terry Fox donation website! We are making Billboards for our school Terry Fox run, and Ms. Duncan came up with an amazing idea! To put a QR code on it for people who have smart phones! It’s a fun and easy way to acess a website just by taking a picture! If you want to make a QR code at home just go to this website http://qrcode.kaywa.com/.Ā  Please donate to http://www.terryfox.org/SchoolRun/Ā or scan this QR code!
