Community Cleanup

Today, on Earth Day we walked around the community picking up trash/litter. We also went to Trilium Manor and cleaned up the gardens and property. Our main focus was to help out the community to seem more welcoming, clean and beautiful. Earth Day is a day to celebrate the beautiful land Mother Nature gave us. Now the neighbourhood is cleaner.

The Trip to the Wye Marsh

On October 16 the grade 7’s went on a field trip to the wye marsh. we investigated ecosystems in the forest. We saw a wigwam, a sugar shack, a cabin and a little lean too that was made of logs.  We learned about the ecosystem in the forest.  We learned that in the forest there are decomposers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, humans, abiotic things (nonliving things) and humans.  If you take one of them away it impacts the others. If you take away the plants the deer won’t have food. All of the animals would be affected.  We are learned that all of those things are linked. An example is deer eat the grass, if you take away the grass from the deer then the humans can’t eat the deer.

Then we investigated ecosystems in the marsh. We were investigating what lives in the mud by dip netting.  Jaymie learned that there are catfish in the marsh.  The marsh is important because the marsh is where all the water is purified before it goes to Lake Huron.  We need clean water to drink. It is a big marsh. It is one of the biggest marshes around.  It is important because it is home to lots of animals, like swans.

We went to see the birds of prey. We saw an owl that looked like Hedwig from Harry Potter.  We saw an owl that looked like a stuffed monkey.  They protect the birds from poachers.

In the afternoon we played a game of Ultimate Survivor. In the game players were herbivores, omnivores and one carnivore (that was Nick). The carnivores had to find three water and 9 prey. Nick had to tag the herbivores and omnivores.  The omnivores needed three water, three foods and three prey.  The herbivore needed 4 foods, 5 water, and no prey.  We learned about what animals need to survive and how they live in their ecosystem.  They interact with the trees and then predators can’t find them.  If we take away the trees, the prey is easier to find and their food disappears.
